For over three decades, the Steamboat Springs Free Summer Concert Series has been a cornerstone of our community, bringing together residents and visitors alike to celebrate music amidst the stunning backdrop of Howelsen Hill. As we step into the summer of 2025, the tradition continues with an exciting lineup that promises unforgettable evenings under the Colorado sky.

A Legacy of Music and Community
Initiated in 1993 by local record shop owner Joe Kboudi and music enthusiast John Waldman, the series began modestly on the Routt County Courthouse lawn, drawing a few hundred attendees. Over the years, it has blossomed into a beloved institution, hosting five concerts each summer with crowds ranging from 3,500 to over 7,000 per event, culminating in an annual attendance of approximately 25,000.
For more on the formation and legacy of the Steamboat Free Summer Concert Series, check out our Common Folk in the Boat podcast featuring Joe Kboudi and John Waldman.
The series has showcased a diverse array of nationally recognized artists across genres such as pop-rock, reggae, bluegrass, blues, and funk. Notable past performers include The String Cheese Incident, Ziggy Marley, Grace Potter and the Nocturnals, Michael Franti and Spearhead, and The Avett Brothers. These concerts have not only provided high-quality entertainment but have also fostered a sense of unity and pride within the community.

The 2025 Lineup: A Summer to Remember
This summer’s series features an eclectic mix of artists, each bringing their unique sound to the Howelsen Hill stage. Here’s what attendees can look forward to:
Saturday, June 21st: Andy Frasco & The UN with special guests Graham Good & The Painters
Kicking off the series, Andy Frasco & The UN are renowned for their high-energy performances that blend rock, blues, and funk. Frontman Andy Frasco’s charismatic stage presence and the band’s infectious rhythms promise an electrifying start to the summer. Opening the evening, local favorites Graham Good & The Painters will set the tone with their soulful melodies and vibrant energy. We had the great opportunity to talk to Graham Good & The Painters as part of our Steamboat Sound Check podcast in 2024, before their opening set was ultimately rained out. We’re excited to see them have another chance to rock the Howelsen Hill stage this summer!

Saturday, July 19th: Julian Marley with special guests Mighty Mystic
Bringing the soulful sounds of reggae to Steamboat, Julian Marley, son of the legendary Bob Marley, continues his father’s legacy with heartfelt lyrics and authentic rhythms. His performances are a celebration of roots reggae, infused with contemporary influences. Joining him, Mighty Mystic adds a modern twist to the genre, known for his powerful vocals and dynamic stage presence.
Thursday, July 31st: Daniel Donato’s Cosmic Country with special guests Bonfire Dub
Daniel Donato’s Cosmic Country offers a fusion of traditional country with psychedelic rock elements, creating a sound that’s both nostalgic and innovative. Donato’s virtuosic guitar skills and the band’s exploratory jams make for a captivating live experience. Prior to his appearance at WinterWonderGrass in March, we visited with Daniel Donato as part of our Steamboat Sound Check podcast. Opening act Bonfire Dub brings a blend of folk, reggae, and world rhythms, setting a mellow and soulful ambiance to start the evening.

Closing the series, The Brothers Comatose deliver their signature mix of folk and bluegrass, characterized by harmonious vocals and lively instrumentation. Their engaging performances often encourage audience participation, creating a communal and festive atmosphere. Ben Morrison of The Brothers Comatose visited with the Steamboat Sound Check podcast earlier this year as part of our series highlighting WinterWonderGrass musicians. Kicking off the night, local band Little Moon Travelers will warm up the crowd. Learn more about Jeremy Campbell, frontman for Little Moon Travelers, during a recent Common Folk in the Boat podcast.
