Ski Haus Supports New Year’s Resolutions Towards Healthier, More Connected Lives Outdoors
As the trials and successes of 2024 fade to memory, many look forward to a “better” year in 2025, with goals of improvement for our personal and professional lives.
Those goals, or resolutions as they are often called, can take many different shapes and forms. From “dry January,” to weight loss, to goals to spend more time with family and friends, many have likely made the commitment to pursue becoming a “better” person.
According to a recent survey by Statista, the most common resolutions among Americans include:
- Saving more money: 20%
- Eating healthier: 19%
- Exercising more: 19%
- Losing weight: 15%
- More time with family & friends: 14%
- Reducing stress: 14%
- Traveling more: 11%
- Getting more sleep: 7%
- Learning a new skill: 7%
But, how many people actually see these goals to completion?
Unfortunately New Year’s “resolutions” often fail, and fail quickly.
According to research compiled by The Fisher College of Business at Ohio State University, only 9% of adults who make resolutions actually complete them. In fact, 23% of those resolutions fail within the first week, and 43% fade into memory by the end of January.
As a vital part of the Yampa Valley outdoor sports community since 1969, the staff at Ski Haus have seen their fair share of people boldly walk through the door on January 1st with a dedication to making their lives better through increased activity and weight loss.
Cathy Weidemer has worked at Ski Haus for the last four years and has personally experienced the decompressing and transformative power of the outdoors. She has also helped countless customers find the “right” equipment and “right” apparel that is necessary to make a New Year’s resolution, and healthier lifestyle, a reality.
“There is no better place to help people get out and enjoy Steamboat as much as I do,” said Weidemer of Ski Haus. “We’ve got all the gear here to help people enjoy their time outside and be comfortable while doing it.”
And being comfortable is a key facet of the outdoor activities that are the cornerstone of many New Year’s resolutions.
One thing that ensures the success of a resolution is the right softgoods.
Jackets, layers and eyewear are all necessary components of safely and comfortably enjoying a day outdoors. Weidemer explained that people often find themselves being too cold or too hot. Both can quickly ruin the experience of being outdoors and dampen the desire to get out again, especially in the cold winter months that accompany the season resolutions.
As a result, Ski Haus stocks “high-output” clothing, which breathes well amid high impact activities, as well as “low-output” clothing for activities that do not generate a large amount of body heat.
To help customers with the cost of finding the right combination of outerwear and layers, Ski Haus offers many soft goods for rental. Weidemer explained that this is a key factor, along with the ability to rent a wide range of outdoor equipment, in helping people determine what outdoor activity is the “right” one for them to be active and comfortably enjoy time with friends and family.
With a wide range of sizes for everyone from “tots to adults”, Ski Haus provides affordable solutions in the quest towards physical and mental health. With a broad selection of clothing and equipment for youth, resolutions can become a family affair where everyone enjoys the benefits of being together outdoors.
Equipment rental options at Ski Haus include cross-country, alpine and alpine touring skis. Snowshoes round out the winter rental offerings, making Ski Haus the perfect location to experience all the different disciplines of winter sports. A demo punch card, which lessens the financial impact of trying out high-end gear, also adds to the fun. One sport that Weidemer has seen an increased interest in over the course of the last few years is alpine touring, which requires a wide-range of specialized equipment.
“It’s nice to try before you buy,” said Weidemer. “We offer that option to folks in a lot of different sports.”
The ability to rent both soft goods and hard goods in the same location makes the resolution process much more economical, and less financially intimidating, for customers. It also allows them the joy of trying out a bunch of different sports in order to find the perfect one. Further, it allows customers to join friends in their preferred sports, which makes the experience that much more beneficial while also forging unbreakable bonds between family and friends.
“I think being outside in general, whether it is by yourself or with others, is very mentally balancing and helpful, especially in our busy lives when we always have our phones in front of us,” explained Weidemer. “It’s really fun to ask folks ‘how it went’ and to hear them say that they had a great time together outdoors.”
Exercising more and enjoying the benefits of an active lifestyle can, at times, be offset by unhealthy eating during or after an activity. To address that, Ski Haus offers a broad range of nutritional supplements and snacks from HoneyStinger, Nuun, LMNT, Bar-U-Eat and other “pocket energy food” companies.
“We have a whole area of nutrition and snacks to help people enjoy their time outdoors and have the energy that they need to do so,” said Weidemer. “We encourage folks to eat well, hydrate well, and to get some good rest when the day is done.”.
In addition to nutrition, Ski Haus also have guidebooks, maps and how-to books to give recreationalists the necessary knowledge base to know where they are going and how to recreate safely.
With so many opportunities on public land for a wide range of both summer and winter activities, the Yampa Valley is one of the best locations imaginable to make a New Year’s resolution a reality. The staff at Ski Haus are well prepared to assist you in every way possible to make your 2025 as healthy and active as you would like it to be.
