In this episode of Steamboat Sound Check, we dive into the world of Illiterate Light, the electrifying rock duo making waves with their high-energy live performances and genre-blending sound. Ahead of their return to Schmiggity’s on March 7, Jeff Gorman joins us to talk about the journey that brought them here—from his early musical influences to their evolution as a band, the lessons learned from signing with Atlantic Records, and the creative process behind their latest album, Arches.
Hailing from Virginia, Illiterate Light is the brainchild of Jeff Gorman (vocals, guitar, synth) and drummer Jake Cochran. The duo is known for their dynamic approach to live music, seamlessly blending indie rock, psych, folk, and danceable grooves—all while sounding like a full band despite being just two people. Their breakout track Better Than I Used To gained national attention on FM radio, and their latest album, Arches, has drawn comparisons to the likes of Radiohead and Tame Impala, further cementing their place as one of the most exciting independent acts today.
Jeff Gorman’s musical roots run deep—his uncle is Steve Gorman, drummer for The Black Crowes—so rock & roll has always been in his DNA. But it was his passion for sustainability and unconventional touring, like the Petrol-Free Jubilee Carnival Tour (which involved a bicycle-powered stage), that helped shape the ethos of Illiterate Light. Jeff shares how those experiences, along with their time on a major label, have influenced the way they approach music now.
As they embark on a six-night Colorado run, we discuss what makes Schmiggity’s a special stop for the band and how it feels to return to the mountains of Steamboat Springs. Plus, looking ahead, we talk about their upcoming shows at Red Rocks and Dillon Amphitheater alongside Dispatch, John Butler, and Donavon Frankenreiter.
