IYKYK – It’s the acronym used for “If you know, you know…” when texting. As a local, there are certain things you should know, but you shouldn’t share. IYKYK the best powder stashes on the mountain! IYKYK how to get to King Solomon Falls. IYKYK where to always find a gem of a parking spot downtown or near the mountain. IYKYK where clothes are optional after dark… you get the point. Those are the things you let people figure out on their own as they work towards earning their “Local Badge”.
I’m about to share with you another IYKYK of Steamboat, but one that should be shared. True Steamboat locals know that one of the best-hidden secrets of the summer is getting to the Steamboat Free Summer Concert series early. Just like the land grabs of the old Wild West, arriving first means you can stake your claim on the venue lawn, securing the perfect spot to enjoy an evening of incredible music under the open sky.
Imagine this: you arrive at the concert grounds with your blanket and lawn chairs in tow, ready to set up your little piece of paradise for the evening. And, since you are there early, it does not take long to find the ideal spot, right in front of the stage or perhaps a bit further back where the sound is just perfect and the kids have space to play. This is your space, your claim, and it’s all yours because you arrived early.
But it’s not just about the space. Arriving early means shorter lines at the beer stands, giving you more time to enjoy a cold beverage before the crowds roll in. With your spot secured and your drink in hand, you can relax and soak in the atmosphere as the opening acts take the stage.
Many times, these opening bands put on performances that are just as memorable, if not more so, than the main acts. John Waldman of Great Knight Productions, who has booked the music for the Free Summer Concert Series since the earliest concerts on the Routt County Courthouse lawn noteded, “Just look at The Devil Makes Three, who opened a few years back, and now would be a headliner level booking.”
This weekend, you can catch the incredible Mama Magnolia (as heard on the Steamboat Locals Choice for Music), a band known for their soulful and energetic performances, opening for Fruition. Their music is a blend of rock, soul, and jazz that will have you dancing and singing along in no time. Free Concert Series board member Coleman Cook expressed his excitement about this particular opportunity to see amazing music for people who get to the venue early. “Mama Magnolia this week is not to be missed! Lead singer, Megan Letts, is awesome. Many music fans who have been to WinterWonderGrass will recognize her as part of WinterWonderWomen.”
Both Waldman and Cook also noted that the Steamboat Free Summer Concert series is dedicated to highlighting local talent, giving opening slots to musicians who bring a unique flavor to the stage. With those shows, not only are you benefitting from more opportunities to claim your lawn space and shorter beer lines, but you are showing support to your friends and neighbors on stage. Later this summer, you’ll have the chance to see The Little Moon Travelers opening for Keller Williams and the Hillbenders. These local musicians add a special touch to the concerts, showcasing the rich musical talent that thrives in our community.
So, if you want to experience one of the best parts of Steamboat’s summer, make sure to arrive early to the Steamboat Free Summer Concert series. Claim your spot, enjoy shorter beer lines, and catch some incredible live music from both the opening acts and the headliners. It’s a summer tradition that true Steamboat locals cherish, and once you experience it, you’ll understand why.
