Steamboat Locals strives to be the place you learn about new music first! Whether it’s a new song from an artist you know, or an innovative sound from an artist you ought to know, Steamboat Locals is constantly updating our music selection each week. Here are some new songs added just this past week:
“Beaches” – beabadoobee
“Beaches” by beabadoobee is a song about finding clarity, peace, and self-assurance amidst life’s uncertainties. Featured on her album This Is How Tomorrow Moves, the song uses imagery of beaches and white walls to symbolize places of inner calm and security. The lyrics reflect themes of self-discovery, encouraging listeners to embrace the present moment rather than waiting for the “perfect” time to take action. The song’s soothing alternative rock sound combines with introspective lyrics to create a track that captures the essence of finding peace in the right places. You can catch beabadoobee this weekend, September 20, at the Fillmore Auditorium in Denver.
“Old Tape” – Lucius (with Adam Granduciel)
“Old Tape” by Lucius, featuring Adam Granduciel of The War on Drugs, is a reflective song that explores themes of mental loops, overthinking, and the voices in our heads that can often keep us stuck. Lucius crafted the song during sessions in Los Angeles, discussing the tendency to get trapped in repetitive thoughts and seeking ways to break free. Granduciel adds his signature atmospheric guitar and vocals, enhancing the song’s emotive and driving feel. The song is the first preview from Lucius’ upcoming album, due in 2025. Lucius will be playing at Fiddlers Green Amphitheatre on September 28, opening for The National and The War on Drugs.
“Giving Up” – Michigander
“Giving Up” by Michigander, the project led by Jason Singer, is a reflective indie-rock anthem aimed at people pleasers who often put others’ needs ahead of their own. The song channels themes of letting go, self-care, and choosing oneself. Singer described it as a self-referential track about breaking free from situations that are no longer worth the emotional effort. It features a catchy, stadium-like sound, offering cathartic release through its energetic chorus. Michigander will be in Denver on October 15, playing the Bluebird Theater.
“Missing Stair” – Big Richard
“Missing Stair” by Big Richard, an all-female bluegrass quartet, explores deeper themes within its haunting melodies. The term “missing stair” is a metaphor for someone in a community whose problematic behavior is widely known but not directly addressed. The song reflects this concept, portraying the emotional toll of unresolved issues. With its combination of striking harmonies and powerful instrumentation, the track has resonated with audiences, particularly in live performances.
“Bad Dreams” – Teddy Swims
Teddy Swims’ song “Bad Dreams” delves into themes of emotional turmoil and the longing for a lost relationship. The track explores how the absence of a loved one can create a haunting sense of vulnerability, where the narrator feels exposed and overwhelmed by negative thoughts. The phrase “I keep slipping into bad dreams” reflects the mental and emotional impact of losing someone, portraying the struggle to find peace without their presence. The song continues to build on Teddy Swims’ soulful and heartfelt style, following the success of his chart-topping single “Lose Control”.
“Chipping Away” – Brett Dennen featuring Matisyahu
“Chipping Away,” a collaboration between Brett Dennen and Matisyahu, blends Dennen’s signature folk-pop sound with Matisyahu’s reggae influences. The track captures a message of resilience and perseverance, as the title suggests, focusing on working through life’s challenges and finding strength in persistence. The song carries a positive, uplifting vibe that encourages listeners to keep moving forward despite obstacles. This is a theme found throughout many of Dennen’s songs, and something he discussed on our Steamboat Sound Check podcast earlier this year.
