Summers in Steamboat Springs are a magical time, filled with endless outdoor activities and a sense of community that brings everyone together. One of the standout events during this season is the Music on the Green series, held in the enchanting Yampa River Botanic Park. This series is a unique opportunity for local residents to immerse themselves in live music performed by our very own talented musicians, all in one of Steamboat’s most treasured summer assets.
Imagine taking an early lunch break from work to unwind amidst the lush greenery and vibrant blooms of the Yampa River Botanic Park. The serene setting, paired with the soothing sounds of live music, creates a perfect escape from the daily grind. If you’re feeling the mid-week slump, a quick break at Music on the Green can lift your spirits and recharge your energy. The combination of natural beauty and musical artistry offers a refreshing pause that can transform your entire day.
One of the many charms of Music on the Green is its focus on local musicians. Many of the artists who perform at this series are also featured on the Steamboat Locals Choice For Music internet radio station, highlighting the rich pool of talent we have right here in our community. For instance, you can hear Trevor G. Potter on July 17th. With a style that reflects the American landscape, Potter’s songs touch on common themes of people and places. He has produced three CDs of acclaimed original music and built a solid reputation as a live performer through major national festival appearances.
You can see Little Moon Travelers on July 31st. This band blends folk, old time, and roots Americana influences to produce a sound that harkens to times past. They formed during the COVID lockdown, playing informal strumming sessions that helped listeners connect and put aside their worries. Their live performances are a testament to the power of roots music in bringing people together.
Jeremy Campbell, lead singer and guitar player for The Little Moon Travelers showed his excitement for this performance by saying, “”To sit amongst the delicate flora that has been so well cared for by our community. What a special thing it is to be able to paint our music over such a landscape. Our favorite part is that we get to play such an intimate set for such a wide range of ages. Even my four year old daughter’s preschool class will be in attendance! Our band’s mottos is ‘In search of meaningful music in meaningful places’ and getting to play the botanic park fits with this credo marvelously.”
Closing down the Music on the Green season is a special evening session from Deer Creek Sharpshooters on August 21st. Formed in 2012, this band combines a love for bluegrass with a dream to push the limits of acoustic music. Based in Steamboat Springs and Denver since 2016, they deliver high-energy, fun-loving shows that jump from fast-paced bluegrass to goofy songs about cats, creating an infectious on-stage energy.
Music on the Green is not just another concert series; it’s an intimate and interactive experience that welcomes families and friends to gather and enjoy. As Kay McKenzie, fiddle player for both Little Moon Travelers and Deer Creek Sharpshooters, beautifully puts it, “Music on the Green is an awesome opportunity to experience great musicians that may usually perform in more of a formal or late night setting. It offers an intimate and interactive family-friendly experience in one of the most picturesque outdoor spaces in Steamboat. It is truly a joy for both the musicians and patrons alike!”
Little Moon Travelers upright bassist Eric Baker has been a member of many local bands during his nearly three decades living in Steamboat. On his opportunities to play the Music on the Green series, he adds, “I think it is a really special community event that Strings offers in their programming. For me, I really like the early time slot because it allows for a wide range of folks to have an opportunity to see us perform. The venue is spectacular, and the musical acts are really diverse. We are grateful for Strings to give local acts like us an opportunity to be in their programming!”
Strings Music Festival partners with the Yampa River Botanic Park to offer this free outdoor concert series every Wednesday morning from 10:00 to 10:45 through August 7, with special evening celebrations on August 14 and August 21. In addition to live music, the August 21 closing performance will include food trucks and a festive atmosphere, making it a perfect way to cap off the summer.
