As we get set to launch the Steamboat Locals app and online platform in July of 2024, we are going to release weekly blogs that focus on the “Five W’s” – Who, What, When, Where, and most importantly Why . This week, let’s focus on…
Where!
Where do you find Steamboat Locals?
The obvious answer here is that you find Steamboat locals in Steamboat Springs, Colorado. Yet, there are certainly plenty of people who identify with “Steamboat” as their home that do not necessarily live in Steamboat proper. Steamboat as a location descriptor is not constrained to being within any city limits. Instead, it is an entire region that lives, works and/or plays in the Steamboat area.
More than a physical location, being a Steamboat Local is a mental destination as well. The college kid who grew up here, but is out-of-state while going to school still feels like a Steamboat Local. The 40-something-year old who hasn’t lived in Steamboat since she left her parent’s house in the late-90’s, but still describes it as going back “home” when her friends ask what she’s doing for the holidays… there’s still a sense of being a Steamboat Local for her. How about the person that ski bummed for a winter or two before leaving to follow a different path in life? Like many others, they can’t shake the fond feelings that they have for our community because the “Yampa Valley Curse” always finds a way to come calling. Yes, there’s a bit of Steamboat Local there too!
There’s even a sushi restaurant in Boone, North Carolina by the name of COBO that has an obvious association to the Steamboat area. When you look at their menu, you find plenty of references to our local area. The owner was once a local, but now is just an occasional visitor. Still, the sense of our local community is strong within him, and he likes to maintain a connection to it. So, it’s even for people like him that we created the Steamboat Locals platform.
